Decarbonising Waste-to-Energy with CCUS technologies


Ambitious EU climate goals are delivering unprecedented momentum to Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage (CCUS). By implementing CCUS, the Waste-to-Energy sector further contributes to decarbonisation and the circular economy.

CCUS involves the capture of CO2 from industrial facilities and hard-to-abate sectors. The CO2 is then transported, via pipeline or ship, and either: stored in geological formations beneath the sea, or used as an input or feedstock to create other products or fuels.

CCUS technologies play an important role in meeting the 2050 carbon neutrality target, including as one of few solutions to tackle emissions from hard-to-abate industries and to remove carbon from the atmosphere.

As Waste-to-Energy cannot switch to another fuel, equipping WtE plants with CCUS technologies can make the sector carbon negative!

Many CCUS projects in the sector are taking off in Europe.
