Steinmüller Engineering’s business overhaul

07.05.2025

In the past fiscal year, ESWET member Steinmüller Engineering focused on further consolidating the business transformation initiated in 2019. Transitioning from a consultancy-based model to long-term Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) contracts has been a major challenge. Nevertheless, the company’s overall business performance remains robust.

The new organisational structure emphasises projects driving the energy transition—such as thermal energy storage solutions for the process industry and fuel switching in fossil-based power generation, including conversions from coal to biomass, natural gas, or hydrogen. This strategic shift is exemplified by EPC contracts for sewage sludge incineration plants in Hamburg and Stuttgart, as well as flue gas cleaning systems that meet the latest emission standards, such as those deployed in Helmstedt.

This transformation has been made possible by Steinmüller’s internationally recognised expertise and broad technical know-how, resulting in the highest volume of new orders in the company’s history.

As part of the company’s long-term planning, Dr. Hans-Ulrich Thierbach handed over his responsibilities as Managing Director to Dr. Stefan Hamel, effective 1 April 2025. Dr. Thierbach will continue to support the company as an advisor to the management, among other roles. Dr. Hamel will oversee engineering, sales, and central functions.

Simultaneously, Mr. Yoshitomo Okuma passed on his responsibilities to his designated successor on the Management Board, Mr. Koichi Hirayama, also effective 1 April 2025. Mr. Hirayama will lead commercial operations, manage the company’s branches in Morocco and South Africa, and oversee the Carbon Solutions Task Force, After Sales, and Engineering & Consulting units.
