How Waste-to-Energy provides clean power to cities and homes
07.03.2025
Waste-to-Energy (WtE) plants in Europe deliver a stable and reliable energy source for millions of households, businesses, and public institutions by recovering heat from the incineration of non-recyclable waste.
Currently, WtE facilities supply heat to approximately 17 million people across Europe, contributing to district heating and cooling networks while reducing greenhouse gas emissions. In some urban areas, these facilities cover more than 50% of residential heat demand, demonstrating their significant impact on local energy systems.
This factsheet explores the many benefits of heat recovery from WtE, from reducing fossil fuel dependency, to enhancing energy efficiency, and promoting the circular economy.
