Steinmüller Engineering received contract for the expansion of the VERA Hamburg sewage sludge incineration plant
Consistent implementation of realignment
In December 2021, Steinmüller Engineering prevailed in an EU-wide bidding process for the construction of a fourth line to expand the sewage sludge incineration plant of HAMBURG WASSER (Hamburger Stadtentwässerung AöR). The expansion has a throughput of approx. 35.000 tons/annum of dry matter and thus ensures the future sewage disposal for the Hanseatic City of Hamburg as well as the ongoing cooperation of partners AZV Südholstein and Entsorgungsbetriebe Lübeck with subsequent utilization of the incineration energy and recovery of the phosphorus from the ash. The plant thus makes a significant contribution to sustainability and resource conservation.
The concept designed by HAMBURG WASSER, with the support of the consulting company AFRY, is based on the three existing lines. In addition to dismantling work and replacement within the existing plant, the complex overall work scope includes the areas of reception, storage, drying, fluidized bed furnace, flue gas cleaning, turbine, water/steam cycle, boiler house, HVAC, electrical and I&C systems, as well as construction and commissioning. Project completion is scheduled in 2025.
Steinmüller Engineering has extensive experience with power plants, especially in the field of modernization and construction in existing power stations.
“Steinmüller Engineering GmbH has consistently implemented the reorganization of the company that it began in the wake of the energy transition and with this order intake has achieved the target it set itself for the fiscal year,” says Vice President Sales Lutz Brandau.
Managing Directors Yoshitomo Okuma, Dr. H.-U. Thierbach and Dr. Stefan Hamel explain: “We have already taken the necessary steps in 2019 with the acquisition of Graf Enviropro GmbH, as well as the takeover of significant parts of the operations of Envirotherm GmbH in 2021, to position our company for the future and to expand the portfolio. The successful order intake required the dedicated commitment of our employees and the active support of our parent company IHI.“
